Alexandra Walker started off as an academic, achieving a doctorate in applied mathematics at the University of St Andrews in 2006 with the support of a Carnegie Scholarship. She went on to complete a Masters degree in leadership for sustainable development, before embarking on a civil service career at HM Treasury. She worked in a number of government departments in various policy, finance and governance roles for twelve years, including as a senior civil servant at the Department for Education and DEFRA. She then moved to the charitable sector, serving as Chief Operating Officer at the Whitehall & Industry Group from 2020-23.

Alexandra has now set up a business, Damsel Not In Distress Ltd, focusing on mental health and wellbeing. She lives in the north-west Highlands of Scotland with her husband Simon, and is often to be found hillwalking in her spare time – they finished their Munro round in 2021. Music is a very important part of Alexandra’s life, including having composed a musical and played the solo in Grieg’s piano concerto with the St Andrews University orchestra.
