£273,666 awarded to undergraduate students in April

After receiving more than 150 applications this year for our Vacation Scholarship scheme, the Trust is delighted to have awarded over £273,000 to 68 undergraduate students studying at Scottish universities.

The Carnegie Vacation Scholarships are focused on enabling students to develop new skills and gain experience beyond their degree course by undertaking a self-directed research project during the summer break before their final year of their undergraduate degree. Many of our Vacation Scholars go on to study at postgraduate level as a result of the experience or take the skills they have gained into employment.

Eligible students are able to apply for funding equivalent to the Scottish Living Wage for a scholarship ranging in length from 2 to 12 weeks.

The scheme supports research projects in any subject at Scotland’s universities. Some examples of the projects from this year’s cohort include:

  • The Impact of Disabled Law Students’ Experiences of Employment on the Future of the Scottish Legal Profession (Glasgow Caledonian University)
  • Unravelling the spectrum of placental pathology in foetal growth restriction and stillbirth (University of Edinburgh)
  • A Comparative Analysis of Gender and Linguistic Space in Foreign Language Classrooms in France and Scotland (University of St Andrews)
  • Computational modelling of novel pathways to convert CO2 into C2+ fuels and chemicals towards net zero (University of Strathclyde)
  • Quantum Computing Advancements by Measuring Non-Linear Spin Dynamics (University of Glasgow)
  • The validity and reliability comparison of isometric device in rehabilitation for widening healthcare in the community (University of the Highlands & Islands)

Students will complete an end of project report detailing the outcomes and impact of their research. If you have any questions about the Vacation Scholarship scheme or our grants, please contact us.
